Maryam Akhavan-Tabib has a
particular interest in the European Convention
on Human Rights. Before undertaking her
pupillage in chambers, she worked at the AIRE
(Advice on Individual Rights in Europe) Centre,
where she drafted submissions to the European
Court of Human Rights in family cases.
These included submissions in a group action
concerning the inability of parents to sue
public authorities for the wrongfully negligent
mis-diagnosis of their children as having
suffered non-accidental injury.
Maryam has
spoken on the right of prisoners to see their
families under the ECHR and has contributed to a
handbook for prisoners' families published in
2006 by the European Committee for the Children
of Prisoners. She has also taught at
Birkbeck Law School as part of their LLM course
on Human Rights.
